Sunrise Mountain Challenge, Nepal, Sept 2019

From the 24-30th September, 9 graduate youth from our reintegration and other education scholarship programs undertook a 7-day challenge to help raise funds for 81 highly vulnerable young children who have been supported with education scholarships by SCAI for the past 3 years and need our ongoing support.

These 9 inspiring youth know what its like to struggle for their basic needs and then be separated from their families, so they were determined to help SCAI support these children and their families, until the families are able to care for the children themselves, which is always the aim of SCAI’s projects.

The youth battled rough, steep, remote, mountainous terrain in sunshine, wind and rain, and not without a few leeches along the way. The days were long, sometimes wet, and generally ended with some very sore legs. The teams spirit and effort was amazing! They not only trekked, but in conjunction with local child clubs ran awareness programs about some of the key issues faced by children and youth in these areas, such as trafficking and early marriage, through speeches, street dramas and pamphlet distribution.

Over $30,000 raised through Sunrise Mountain Challenge! (2013)

In early October 2013 a group of 10 very enthusiastic teenagers from Sunrise took on the “Sunrise Mountain Challenge” to help raise funds for 2 new homes for Sunrise and emergency rescue children. Basudev (Roshan), Ganesh, Bishnu, Buddhiman, Mansingh, Lal, Mangaldas, Chham, Niraz and Shankerman successfully met the challenge which was to complete a 9-10 day trek to Annapurna Base Camp in 7-8 days (whilst ensuring there are no problems with altitude). It was not always easy but they battled on with smiles on their faces each day, hiking up and down mountainous pathways, through drizzle, for an average of 7-8 hours per day, with one day being 13 hours! The teens carried their own backpacks and were closely supervised by two Sunrise reps, a qualified guide and a porter in case they needed any assistance.

We are thrilled to share that we raised over $30,000 thanks to many very generous people.

Thousands of children in Nepal continue to be separated from their families due to trafficking or being enticed away with the promise of a better life and education. Thousands still live in orphanages despite having families, work as child labourer’s or enter into early marriage.
