Standing With Nepal: Emergency Relief Reaches Flood-Affected Families

When disaster strikes, solidarity matters. And when communities are in crisis, timely action can make all the difference.

Sunrise Children’s Association Inc. (SCAI) is standing alongside families and communities affected by the devastating floods in Nuwakot and Rasuwa, Nepal.

For more than 15 years, SCAI and our partners have worked alongside children, families and communities across these areas. These are not communities we simply support from a distance — they are communities we know, care about and have stood with for many years.

That is why, when the floods struck, our response was immediate.

Our Children and Families Are Safe

Our first concern was the safety of the children and families connected with Sunrise programmes.

We are deeply relieved to confirm that all children and families supported through Sunrise programmes are safe, although some have been directly affected by the flooding.

But while our programme families are safe, the wider impact of the disaster has been devastating. Families have lost homes, belongings and livelihoods. Damaged roads and bridges have left some communities difficult to access. Many are facing the difficult reality of rebuilding their lives with very few resources. Access to food, clean drinking water, shelter, clothing and basic hygiene supplies has become an urgent concern.

From Concern to Action

From the earliest days of the emergency, our team has been closely monitoring the situation on the ground.

Some members of our team were already in Nuwakot when the flooding occurred. Others travelled directly to the affected area on Day 2, as soon as rescue and relief operations were underway.

Our long-standing relationships in the region have allowed us to maintain close communication with communities and local authorities, helping us understand where assistance is most urgently needed.

Following an urgent coordination meeting with the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) in Bidur, Nuwakot, our team moved quickly to organise our first emergency relief response.

Our First Emergency Relief Delivery

Our first truckload of essential supplies was delivered as part of the government-coordinated relief response for affected families.

The emergency supplies included:

  • 100 bags of rice (25kg each)
  • 150kg of daal
  • 100 litres of cooking oil
  • 300 bottles of drinking water

These are basic necessities, but for families who have lost access to their homes, food supplies and everyday essentials, they provide immediate and practical support at a time when it is needed most.

This first delivery is only the beginning.

The Next Stage of Relief

As the situation develops and access to affected communities improves, our team is continuing to assess needs directly from the field.

The next stage of our emergency response is focused on providing essential items to families who have lost homes, belongings and basic necessities. This includes:

  • Blankets and warm clothing for families facing difficult shelter conditions
  • Hygiene kits to help families maintain basic health and sanitation during the emergency
  • Clothing and essential household items for people who have lost personal belongings
  • Further food and emergency supplies based on needs identified by local communities and authorities

Our approach is simple: listen to local needs, coordinate with local authorities and respond where our support can make the greatest difference.

A Community Response

This emergency response has been possible because people acted quickly.

We are incredibly grateful to the dedicated SCAI team, our volunteer Board members, and the teams from Sunrise Nepal and RUDEC Nepal, who responded rapidly and continue to work alongside affected communities.

We are equally grateful to everyone who has contributed to our emergency appeal. Every donation, large or small, is helping turn concern into action.

It is helping provide food to families who need it.

It is helping provide clean drinking water.

It is helping us prepare blankets, clothing and hygiene supplies for people who have lost so much.

And, importantly, it is reminding families affected by this disaster that they are not alone.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Natural disasters can change a family’s life in a matter of hours. Recovery, however, can take months or even years.

As an organisation with more than 15 years of experience working alongside communities in Nuwakot and Rasuwa, we are committed to remaining present beyond the immediate emergency. Our team will continue to monitor the situation, work with local authorities and community partners, and direct support towards the needs identified on the ground.

The first relief has reached affected families. The next stage is already underway.

With your support, we can continue standing beside communities as they recover, rebuild and begin looking towards the future.
